A Family Friendly Destination Means Less Planning

The Badlands National Park in South Dakota is a stunning landscape that, at times, is overlooked but cannot be missed. The Badlands sprawl over 244,000 acres and are known for their unique geography created by millions of years of erosion. As a result, quiet, eerily beautiful shapes, peaks, and terribly beautiful spires adorn the park.

There are plenty of opportunities to explore the Badlands on foot via nature trails or off-trail hiking, as well as on dirt-bike and four-wheel-drive routes, making this one of the best family friendly destinations in the country.  Visitors can also take advantage of the Badlands’ abundance of wildlife by birdwatching or by Night Sky Viewing under the stars. Bison, Antelope, Bighorn Sheep, and Prairie Dogs are just a few critters that roam this area.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is within 30 minutes of Rapid City, South Dakota. Created to attract tourism to the area, it continues to do so almost 100 years later. But, while Mount Rushmore (The Six Grandfathers) tends to be first on your mind, there is much more.

The Black Hills of South Dakota are a fantastic area that should be experienced by nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Places like the Black Hills National Forest and Spearfish Canyon wow visitors with granite peaks, crystal clear waterfalls, and plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery. Buffalo Gap National Grasslands is a haven for fossil and rock hounds; we can hardly help ourselves.

Wind Cave National Park is located just south of Custer State Park, one of the best places in the world to observe wild North American Bison. Just a short distance from Rapid City is our first National Monument, Devil’s Tower (Bear Lodge), the wild west town of Deadwood, and more.

Culture abounds and is a relatively unexplored region in Pine Ridge Reservation, home to the mighty Oglala Lakota. Here you can meet with local artists, learn about Lakota Heritage, view significant artifacts, and better understand Native American life, both past and present.

Traveling with little ones? No place is better than the Black Hills. In addition to the wildlife, outdoor recreation, and areas of wonder, we have Reptile GardensBear Country U.S.A, gold panning, Zip Lining, Wall Drug, the 1880 Train, Rushmore Tramway, Jewel Cave, the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, and the Mammoth Site in the Southern Black Hills.

Why the Black Hills & Badlands Are a Top Family Friendly Destination

black hills and badlands tour family friendly destination

If you are searching for a family friendly destination where adventure, scenery, wildlife, and history all blend together, the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota offer one of the most well-rounded experiences in the United States. This region is overflowing with natural wonders, vibrant culture, and attractions designed for every age group. Whether you are planning a road trip with little ones, traveling with teens, or gathering several generations for a memorable vacation, this area makes it easy to enjoy something meaningful together.

The Badlands National Park alone is an unforgettable introduction to the region. Covering more than 244,000 acres, the park stretches across a landscape shaped by millions of years of erosion. Its layered buttes, silent spires, and pastel colored ridges look almost otherworldly, yet they are remarkably accessible for families. Children love the boardwalk trails, wildlife sightings, and the chance to stand right inside a landscape that feels like a giant natural playground. Bison, antelope, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs are commonly seen, creating wonderful teaching moments and great photo opportunities.

Active families can explore nature trails, enjoy short hikes on safe terrain, or take in the park’s views from the comfort of their vehicle. At night, the area transforms beneath some of the darkest skies in the country. Night sky viewing gives families a chance to share quiet moments under stars that appear brighter than many have ever seen. It is a simple but powerful way to end a day of exploration.

Just west of the Badlands, the Black Hills offer even more for families to discover. Mount Rushmore is only about thirty minutes from Rapid City and has been welcoming visitors for nearly a century. While the famous carving tends to be the first thing that comes to mind, it is just one piece of what makes this region such a family friendly destination. Nearby, the Black Hills National Forest provides scenic drives, picnic areas, lakes, and trails suitable for children, teens, and adults alike.

Places like Spearfish Canyon offer waterfalls, short walks, and stunning scenery that the entire family can enjoy without strenuous hiking. The Buffalo Gap National Grasslands are ideal for families with young explorers interested in fossils, rocks, or wide-open landscapes. Wind Cave National Park, just south of Custer State Park, allows families to experience one of the country’s oldest national parks and the unique honeycomb limestone formations beneath the surface.

Custer State Park itself is one of the best places in North America to observe wild bison safely. The Wildlife Loop Road is a favorite among families. Children love spotting prairie dogs and burros, and the entire park feels designed to nurture curiosity and outdoor exploration.

For days when you want something a bit more structured, the Black Hills shine as a family friendly destination thanks to a long list of attractions tailored for kids. Reptile Gardens, the 1880 Train, the Rushmore Tramway, and the South Dakota Air and Space Museum each offer hands-on experiences that don’t overwhelm younger travelers. Wall Drug, Jewel Cave, the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, and gold panning adventures create a playful mix of education and fun.

Culture also plays an important role in this region, and families can experience some of the most authentic storytelling in the Pine Ridge Reservation, home to the Oglala Lakota. Meeting local artists, learning about Lakota heritage, and seeing significant artifacts can help children understand a more complete history of the land they are exploring.

With so many attractions close together, short drives, and experiences accessible to all ages, the Black Hills and Badlands truly stand out as a family friendly destination. Whether your goal is to relax, explore, learn, or simply spend quality time together, this region creates moments everyone will remember with warmth and excitement.
