If you’re looking for a more leisurely experience, stop at Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls, or my favorite, Roughlock Falls. This picturesque waterfall cascades down the rocky walls of Spearfish Canyon and is easily accessible from the road.

Whether you want to take in the view or dip your toes in the water, this spot is not to be missed. And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try rock climbing? Spearfish Canyon Scenic Drive

Arguably one of the best in all of South Dakota, the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Drive is outstanding in every way. The area was never well known until the railroad spurted the canyon, attracting visitors from all over the country. Frank Lloyd Wright was one of them, who commented that it was even better scenery than that of the Grand Canyon. He spent some time here and made flattering comments about Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, and Spearfish Canyon Scenic Drive.

The drive itself is 19 miles and has plenty of pull-offs, usually where there are trailheads or waterfalls. There are lots of twists and curves, but the drive is flat for the most part. Each turn reveals something new, another white canyon cliff, a cave in the wall, a waterfall, and in Autumn colors so bright yellow and orange you’ll think the forest is on fire. Honestly, it’s stunning. A strong suggestion is to take your time driving the canyon. It can be an all-day experience if you do it right. If someone riding your tail, pull over and let them pass because you’re here to take it all in.

Waterfalls of Spearfish Canyon

During your drive on the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Drive, you will come across three waterfalls. In my opinion, the most breathtaking of these is Roughlock Falls State Nature Area. This part of the drive is perfect for relaxing walks along the creek, where you can listen to the birds and the sound of water flowing over rocks. The water is crystal clear, allowing you to see all the way to the bottom.

Roughlock Falls State Nature Area

The Roughlock Falls State Nature Area offers picnic tables, restrooms, overlooks, and paved trails. Roughlock is my favorite because you can walk along the creek and see several more minor “falls” along the way. Roughlock Falls was given because of the locks they had to put through the wagon wheels to keep them from tumbling through this area.
To get to Roughlock Falls, visitors can take a scenic drive through Spearfish Canyon, Route 14A, renowned for its stunning beauty and unique rock formations. Once in the nature area, visitors can explore the trails that wind through the lush forest surrounding the falls. The Roughlock Falls Trail is a short, easy walk leading directly to the falls. At the same time, the Spearfish Canyon Trail offers a longer and more challenging hike through the canyon.

In addition to Roughlock Falls, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Devil’s Bathtub and Spearfish Falls. The Devil’s Bathtub is a natural pool formed by the rushing water of Spearfish Creek. At the same time, Spearfish Falls is a towering waterfall that cascades over 60 feet into a serene pool below.

Roughlock Falls State Nature Area is a must-see destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its stunning waterfall, beautiful trails, and rich history, it’s no wonder that this hidden gem has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. So pack your hiking boots and head to Roughlock Falls for a peaceful and rejuvenating escape into nature.

Roughlock Falls State Nature Area

Spearfish Falls is located near the Latchstring Inn. You can use the parking lot there and begin the hike to the falls. It’s a little off the beaten path but close to Roughlock Falls. It’s worth the hike. Spearfish Falls are high and mighty. It’s probably the most substantial flowing fall in the canyon; however, years ago, before the water in the area was manipulated, it flowed twice the volume. Even though the water flow is reduced, the waterfall is still worth seeing. This particular waterfall is beautiful through all seasons, even winter. Icicles and strange formations are created from the flowing water at such a height. It’s a beautiful sight to see.

The waterfall on the Spearfish Canyon Trail is a breathtaking sight to behold and holds cultural and historical significance. The Native American tribes, such as the Lakota Sioux, who have inhabited the area for centuries, consider the falls sacred. The falls are believed to possess healing powers, and many people still come to them to perform spiritual ceremonies. The falls also played an essential role in the early pioneer days as a source of power for the first hydroelectric plant in South Dakota. Today, the falls continue to attract visitors worldwide who come to marvel at their beauty and learn about their rich history.

Visitors have the option to explore the nearby area through various trails. One of the most well-liked hiking routes is the Spearfish Canyon Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the landscape while passing by the waterfall. This trail is known for its challenging terrain and picturesque charm.

If you’re looking for a place to grab a bite to eat after your hike, the Latchstring Restaurant is a great option. The restaurant has a rich history and has served delicious food to visitors for many years. The restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

If you plan to hike the Spearfish Canyon Trail, you should know that it’s approximately 3 miles long. You’ll encounter a few steep inclines along the way, so it’s best to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. One of the trail’s highlights is the stunning waterfall, a great spot to take a break and enjoy the view. However, be cautious if you get close to the falls, as the rocks can be slippery and dangerous. Overall, the Spearfish Canyon Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike that’s sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Bridal Veil Falls

The history of  Bridal Veil Falls dates back to the early 1900s when settlers first discovered the area. It was used as a power source for a nearby gold mine but has since become a popular tourist attraction. The falls are located in the heart of Spearfish Canyon, which has long been considered one of the most beautiful canyon areas in the United States.

To reach Bridal Veil Falls, visitors can park at the nearby trailhead and hike a short distance to the base of the falls. The hike is relatively easy and offers stunning views of the surrounding canyon. Along the way, visitors can take in the area’s natural beauty, including towering pines, rugged rock formations, and crystal-clear streams.

Once at the falls, visitors can enjoy the cool mist and spray created by the cascading water, which drops over 60 feet into a clear pool below. The falls are particularly impressive during the spring and early summer when the surrounding trees and plants fully bloom.
